Fall protection over the railway at Stavanger railway station

As part of a comprehensive safety and refurbishment project for Stavanger Parkering, HMG iNFRA supplied and installed a 150-metre-long fall protection system on the bridge crossing and running alongside the railway tracks at Stavanger Railway Station. The project was awarded through a competitive tender process involving five qualified suppliers. Following a presentation of HMG iNFRA’s solution, the company was unanimously selected due to the robustness of the design and its high technical quality.

The project included the replacement and installation of 73 Hammerglass panels on the retaining wall within the existing steel structure. The existing glass fixings were redesigned and modified to further enhance safety and improve the attachment of the panels. Initial site measurements were carried out in January.

The work was performed above active railway tracks and required meticulous planning, coordination, and safety management. Due to ongoing rail traffic and the safety requirements imposed by Bane NOR, the installation was carried out during both day and night shifts under approved railway safety supervision.

The installation process was further complicated when the retaining wall was cleaned and clad with sheet metal after the initial measurements had been completed. As a result, the dimensions of the cladding exceeded the original specifications, requiring adjustments during installation. Despite challenging working conditions, limited lifting equipment, and a complex schedule, the project was completed on time and according to plan.

The result is a robust and aesthetically pleasing fall protection system that meets demanding requirements for safety, durability, and functionality in a challenging railway environment.
